Newmarket & District Canine Society Premier Open Show 2023 Critique

I would like to thank the Committee of this very well run, friendly show, for their invitation to judge several hound and terrier breeds on a hot sunny day. The weather, lovely though it was, affected some of the dogs despite trying to keep them in what little shade was available as much as possible. Thank you also to my very able stewards who kept me in line and on track through the day.

Puppy (1,0)

1st & BPIB Girling’s Chuilinn Flare Lovely, typey, balanced 10 month old bitch with a nice crisp coat. Super head and expression. Good neck into well laid shoulders and straight front with strong elbows. Good depth of chest for a youngster leading to a nice topline and tuck up. Strong hindquarters. Moved well.

Yearling No Entries

Post Graduate (3,1)

1st & BOB Shannon’s Erewhon Firefly Quality, balanced, feminine 5 yr old bitch of super type. Lovely head and expression. Strong neck into the best of fronts with good forechest, excellent fill-in and elbows set well under. I particularly liked her topline, with strong, broad, drooping quarters and well let down hocks. She moved with freedom and drive enabling her to cover the ground effortlessly, whilst holding her topline. Pleased to award her BOB

2nd Hyndsight Only In My Dreams Another super bitch of excellent type. Pleasant head and expression into long neck. Well ribbed back. Good top and under lines leading to well muscled hindquarters. Just preferred the front construction of 1. Moved well.

Open (2,1)

1st & RBOB Shannon’s Packway Downlander at Erewhon Typey, masculine dog 2½ yrs old. Excellent size. Nice head with soft expression. Strong neck into well laid shoulders but would like a little more return of upper arm to complete the picture. Straight forelegs and nice spring to his pasterns. Moved straight to and fro and with freedom in profile holding his topline, just out moved by a super bitch today. Pleased to award him RBOB.
