Deerhound Club Limited Show (South) 2023 Critique

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for inviting me to judge this show. Thank you to my stewards and most of all the exhibitors for taking the time to bring your hounds for me to judge.

Overall I felt the quality of my entry was good with some stunning heads including beautiful ears, correct teeth, nice dark eyes giving soft expressions. I could willingly have taken a few home with me.

PUPPY DOG ( 5, 3 )

1st Sandells & Lovell – Packway Blue Moon

7mth. old dark puppy with a beautiful head, well set neck which leads into a correct layback of shoulder. Nice rise to his topline sloping over his croup giving him the opportunity to carry is tail nice and low. He stood on good tight feet with his elbows under his withers and a nice deep chest with good tuck up. His coat was nice and crisp to the touch and was delighted to award him BPIS.

2nd Finnett & Heathcote – Antonius Vertragus the- Rift-Valley with Hyndsight

10mth old puppy of different type. Lovely head a little lighter in build than the first. Another nice shapely puppy . Preferred low hocks on this puppy but the tuck up of the first. We all know puppies can alter so much at this age and I'm sure will swap placings in future shows. Another nice puppy and one to watch in the future.

JUNIOR DOG ( 2, 1 )

1st Taylor – Ormanstar Ezra

Oh my word, I loved this 14mth boy from the moment I turned around and saw him. He wasn’t a disappointment to go over. He has a real masculine head. I'd have liked a little less stop but has such neat ears. He has such good bone and great feet. Nice harsh coat with enough tuck up. Nice fall away at the rear with good turn of stifle. He was presented in top condition as I would expect form this kennel. He floated effortlessly round the ring and was delighted to award him BIS.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG ( 3,1 )

1st Walkers – Luckhurst Windigo

This was the first of many classes this gentleman had entered and ended up getting beaten in the last class so was unable to be considered in the final line up, purely down to lack of knowledge. We all started somewhere and at least he had plenty of practice. I'm hoping I didn’t put him off as he did a grand job showing his 2yr old. Another hound with a correct head, and good shoulders leading to good top line and fall away allowing correct tail carriage. Keep up the good work.

2nd Taylors – Stableview Willow

Another kind hound with a sweet disposition. Lighter in colour but this didn’t mean his coat wasn't harsh. Shorter in loin than the first but still has a good tuck up. Good turn of stifle and nice low hocks. Presented beautifully.

SPECIAL YEARLING DOG ( 1, 0 )

1st Cummings – Claonaiglen Artney

This is a big lad all in the right place but just more of him! He had the sweetest disposition with a ‘look into my eyes’ expression. He has a good deep chest giving plenty of lung and heart room. Would have liked a little more tuck up but has great length of body with good turn of stifle and nice low hocks. He didn’t seem just on form today.

UNDERGRADUATE DOG ( 3, 1 )

1st Walker – Luckhurst Windigo

2nd Taylor – Stableview Willow

POST GRADUATE DOG ( 1, 2 )

1st Walker – Luckhurst Windigo

OPEN DOG ( 5, 2 )

1st Lewis – Claonaiglen Clachfin

Fully mature 4yr old male. Another fully relaxed boy showing super temperament. Correct head proportions leading onto a strong neck with great angles under the thick coat. I actually closed my eyes while going over him as he was so nice to feel. Once we got him moving across the ring he was sound and true. I later found out he hasn’t been with this kennel long and is work in progress. Was delighted to award him RBD

2nd Wilce-Quinton & Quinton – Kirjojax Harris

I judged this dog at the beginning of the year and he wasn’t on form back then, today he was but unlucky to meet 1st place. I would like a little more angulation in his front as I feel it spoils his topline. He has a good fallaway and plenty of muscle tone. Presented in tip top condition as always by this kennel.

3rd Walker – Luckhurst Windigo

PUPPY BITCH (6,1)

This was a super class of puppies, as I said earlier when they are this young they can change so rapidly so today’s results may not be the same next month.

1st Finnett & Heathcote – Hyndsight Wicked Game

9mth old feminine puppy with an exquisite head, lovely tight ears. Set on a correct neck placement, leading into well laid shoulders. Just enough rise over her loin flowing to steep fall away. She has a good tuck up with her ribs reaching her elbows. I would have liked a little less rear angulation. Covered in a lovely crisp dark coat.

2nd Lucas & Dargonne – Packway The Enigma

8mth old, slightly of heavier build than 1st but none the less very shapely. Preferred the head of 1st but topline of 2nd Good front angulation with a lovely deep chest and tuck up. Correct rear angulation just lost out today on movement. Both puppies I will watch with interest.

3rd Peach - Kilbourne Havana

JUNIOR BITCH (3,0)

1st Peach - Kilbourne Devon

A classy hound from this well-established kennel. Turned out in tip top condition. She oozed femininity from her head to her tail. Nice head with neat ears. Good front angles, correct top line and tuck up. Enough rear angulation with lovely low set hocks. Glossy dark crisp coat covering this shapely hound.

2nd Finnett & Heathcote – Antonius Vertragus the-Mara-River with Hyndsight

At only 10mths of age she still so young with a lot of growing to do. Petit heat with neat ears. At the moment her front is at that funny upright stage thus making her topline a little flat. She has a good fall away and nice low hocks. On the day she was a little unsettled and I’m sure she will be different again this time next year.

3rd Girling – Chuilinn Flare

SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH (3,2)

1st Taylor – Packway Star of the East

8mth old puppy with that typical sweet expression. She seemed a little overwhelmed on the day. Nice front angles with enough bone. Slight rise over the topline with a tuck up underneath. Good fall away allowing easy tail carriage. Presented in great condition and handled well.

SPECIAL YEARLING BITCH (4,1)

1st Edwards – Quantistico Lucia to Kilbourne

Another lovely feminine bitch from this kennel at only 19mths she will come into her prime next year. Femanine head with neat ears flowing into a strong neck then into strong shoulder placement. Not the biggest but still within breed standard. Nice topline and underline with good turn of stifle sat on low hocks. Again correct fall away allowing free movement. I felt she had lost her mojo, maybe just too warm on the day.

2nd Jones - Quantistico Gina

It seems this is litter sister to 1st and yet shows very little resemblance. A much lighter framed youngster showing nice curves both top and underline. Not as much coat as 1st but still crisp and harsh. Moved effortlessly and true going away and coming back alongside her owner who didn’t stop smiling.

3rd Llewellyn – Kilbourne Ocean Blue of Matahari

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH (4,3)

1st Jones - Ormanstar Dark Delight

3yr old girl, lighter framed than some. Nice head and ear set correct. Would have liked a bit more front angulation to allow her to stride out a bit better. Nice enough topline and good deep chest flowing to good tuck up. Nice fallaway just would have preferred a bit more width at the rear. She has a nice crisp coat covering her frame.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (6,1)

1st Spence- Hyndsight Neaghley

Super head with high set, neat ears. Well arched neck leading to good shoulder placement with her elbows under her whithers. Good topline and fallaway, with good turn of stifle. Nice low hocks. Another great harsh crisp coat. To start with she was a little choppy on the move but once she got going she moved with drive. RBIS & RBIS

2nd Lucas & Dargonne - Packway Ecotrailer

I’ve always liked this hound and was unlucky to come up against 1st . Nice head and ear set good. Good strong neck leading to good shoulders. Another one with a correct topline but with better tuckup and rear than 1st. Just didn’t move quite as well as 1st on the day.

3rd Lewis -Claonaglen Fynne to Luckhurst

OPEN BITCH (9,5)

1st Lucas & Dargonne – Packway Smackfarthing

A great example from this kennel. Beautiful head with tight ears leading to a strong neck and to correct shoulder placement. Her elbows sit neatly under her withers. She has a good deep chest and tuck up. Great angulation and low hocks. Handled brilliantly. RBB

2nd Wilce-Quinton & Quinton – Kilbourne Louisa Chick to Kirjojax

Nice head and good ears set high leading to her neck, a little shorter than 1st giving her a shorter coupled outline. Good front angulation with a deep chest with less of a tuck up than 1st. Good rear angles and low hocks. Lost out today on her movement.

3rd Nitsch – Hyndsight Dixon (AI)

VETERAN BITCH ( 4, 1 )

What an honour to have 3 sound veterans to go over. All 3 of them moved effortlessly round a decent sized ring. I was nitpicking between them all.

1st Lucas & Dargonne – Packway Little Loxley

Mother and grandmother of previous exhibits from this kennel. Oh my she's still got it. Shes a great shape to look at and just as nice to go over. Her head is correct but maybe would have liked neater ears. Good front and rear angles . A little bit flat on her topline but that’s allowed at her age. BVIS

2nd Llewwllyn – Kilbourne Mistress Martha at Matahari

3rd Wilce-Quinton & Quinton – Kilbourne Marie Claire at Kirjojax

Well what do you know !! Litter sisters, absolutely amazing. Both of these are still shown in great shape. Again both have correct heads and neat ears . Leading to strong necks, maybe a little upright in shoulder, but so what does it really matter?. They both have good spring of rib and enough tuck up. Correct rear angles and low hocks.
