Deerhound Club Breed Show (Sunday) 2023 Critique

Thank you for the opportunity to judge your lovely hounds. Sunday classes come after a busy first day at the show and some fatigue in hounds (and handlers!) was coming through. The ring surface was flat and smooth but did accentuate some movement issues, in particular rear movement, which needs to be watched. Nevertheless, there were some really competitive classes resulting in close and difficult decisions – always a good sign of the quality of hounds coming through.

Class 19 Maiden (Dog or Bitch) 8 entries, 5 absent

  1. Penherald Polka at Calbraidh. Bitch c. 18 months Lovely harsh coat. Lovely expression and dark eye. Good forechest and fill in. Lovely tight feet. Would prefer a little more rise over the loin but has good bend of stifle. Profile movement was good.

  2. Kilbourne Ocean Blue of Matahari. Bitch c. 18 months another lovely bitch. Very slightly lighter eye than 1. Good coat. Front angulation good and better rise over the loin than 1. Close decision but went for the overall balance and maturity of 1 today. Profile movement was good and has great potential as she matures and fills out. Won Class 24 which was another competitive class with good movement also presented in that class.

  3. Stableview Willow. Dog c. 2.5 years Nice eye and expression with good head furnishings. Good bone and coat. Would have preferred more length to body. Tail held a little high on the move but was moving freely.

Class 20 Special Coursing/Lure Chasing 3 entries, 0 absent

  1. Beardswood Gillie’s Whisper. Bitch approaching 3 years. A real eye catcher with just great overall balance and impression of strength. Lovely dark eyes. Feet were excellent. Super depth of chest and good forechest with ample fill in. Good angulation with a lovely bend of stifle. Profile movement good. Won on overall shape and length with top line held well on the move

  2. Packway Ecotrailer. Bitch c. 2.5 years. Lovely aquiline nose but with very slightly lighter eye than 1. Super feet and good bone. Overall in excellent muscled condition and a lovely bitch.

  3. Packway Little Loxley. Bitch 7 years good dark eye. Lovely shape overall and good depth of chest. Was moving out well holding a good top line.

Class 21 Brace

  1. Mrs Havercroft. This brace looked really alike and were moving well together and were of a similar type with similar heads. Good length to body on both dogs.

  2. Mr Jones younger brace with lovely sweet head of bitch. Both were on the smaller size but had good bone and feet with good length to body. Moving well together.

  3. Mr+Mrs Swanson Good bone and moving nicely as a pair.

Class 22 Team

  1. Miss Llewellyn – lovely team and good to see. All moving together and well in the ring. All had good feet and good length in body. Good temperaments and working well together.

Class 24 Special Not Bred by Exhibitor 19 entries, 11 absent

  1. Kilbourne Ocean Blue of Matahari. See class 19 critique

  2. Ch Cotherstone Dallas Dhu of Altimarlach. Dog 5 years. Lovely mature dog with good dark coat and lovely head and expression. Feet could be tighter and profile a little dipped in the back today but it had been a long weekend.

  3. Claonaiglen Artney Dog c. 18 months. Very good balance dog which secured 3rd place in competitive class. Good bend of stifle. Good ears.

Class 25 Bred by Exhibitor 12 entries, 10 absent

  1. Beardswood Gillie’s Whisper. Bitch approaching 3 years. See Class 20 critique.

  2. Stranwith Ixxia. Bitch c. 2.5 years. Lighter grey bitch with good coat. She was a bit less settled in the ring today so not showing as well as 1 but I did see some good profile movement with power from good rear angulation. Lovely head and good small well set ears. One to watch.

Class 26 Special Rotherwood Stakes Dog or Bitch 11 entries, 8 absent

Really liked this class I had 3 super entries here making for very close decisions.

  1. Beardswood Verbena. Bitch c 2.5 years. Eye catching dark bitch. Best movement of class with lovely top line held well on the move. Overall, very well balanced with good feminine head leading into a lovely long neck and a good depth of chest. Would have preferred more front pastern slope but she had good front and rear angulation and was in excellent well muscled condition.

  2. Stranwith Flora Bitch 7 years. Lighter grey bitch. Stunning profile shape and balance with lovely arch over the loin with good front and rear angulation. Lovely head and expression. In the end I went for the movement of first. But this was a really lovely hound.

  3. Packway Smackfarthing. Bitch approaching 4 years. Another lovely Bitch. Strength was in the powerful hindquarters with super bend of stifle together with a good rise over the loin and lovely tail. Nice coat and good dark eye and nice ears. To be very picky I felt she didn’t quite have bone of 1 and 2 and today her movement wasn’t as settled.
