The National Championship Show 2022 Critique

Thank you to the Society for my invite, the weather was very kind to us, it stayed dry and didn’t get too hot for Deerhounds. I was blessed with a good entry and so I would also like to thank the exhibitors who ventured out. As we expect with Deerhounds all temperaments were pleasant, mouths/bites all good so I will not mention these again. I found the overall quality that I Had to be generally good, although there is many variations in type and size.

Puppy Dog. 1 Entry

1st Wragg’s Neroche Kielder.

Outstanding young male, full of promise and has the most beautiful shape in profile with pleasing curves. Excellent head, nice eye and ear set with good length of neck, correctly angled front construction balanced to rear. Already has desired width of body and I’m sure when finished will be outstanding. Difficult to asses his movement today.

Yearling Dog. 3 Entries

1st Shannon’s Packway Downlander At Erewon.

A rangy Hound who is well constructed and balanced in his frame. I particularly liked his ability to free stand on his own, as you would desire him to with little input from his handler. On the move he is pleasing when viewed in profile. His head and expression are very typical. A very nice Hound overall.

2nd Constantine’s Ormanstar Cosmo At Kaleginy.

Very different to 1st this dog has correctly angled fore quarters and angulated rear with depth of chest and desired top line. Shorter in body and quite tall when compared to 1st. A beautiful coat with good looking head. Moved true coming and going.

3rd Cummings Kaleginy Trubador.

Post Graduate Dog. 7 Entries 2 Absent.

1st Taylor’s Ormanstar Dark Shadow.

I have seen this dog go through some growth stages, and he is now living up to what he promised as a puppy. He has the body- in width, length and depth without being over done in any way, nor will he I believe when he is finished. Balanced construction front and rear. I think it will not be long before he is pushing for top honours.

2nd Quinton’s Kirojax Harris.

Another lovely dog but wasn’t relaxed when stood today making assessment difficult. Shorter coupled than first without the same fore angles but still very correct. Movement is this dog’s fortune however as he is a pleasure both in coming and going but also in profile where he really is a delight. A very nice head adds to this dog’s good looks.

3rd Steele’s Sorimsway Mr Sleepy Hollow.

Limit Dog. 7 Entries 1 Absent

1st Lewis’s Greyhawks Romanie Mishto Of Luckhurst.

This dog’s shape and type took my eye as soon as he came into the ring. His overall shape and proportions are delightful. Although well constructed, he does have a tendency to pace on the move, which is a shame as he does have the ability to move very well. I would have liked a little more of him, but still stood out in this strong limit dog class.

2nd Nichols and Baker’s Kensteen Laird Of Islay At Ballygrand.

Different type to 1st. Well made body with good width and depth. Strong through the loin with well angled powerful hind quarters. Moved well and looks the part moving in profile. A nicely textured coat covering his shapely frame.

3rd Mckinnon’s Claonaiglen Clachfin.

Open Dog. 3 Entries

1st Peach’s Kilbourne Merak.

This male is now coming into his best at almost 4 years. A good size male with a well-made body, he has a correct length of upper arm and lay of shoulder. (Not too wide in front) With a good bend of stifle and strength in the rear. Strong in the neck that carries over his top line with good width between hips. Moves very true on the move although was a little lacklustre on the move today which cost him later. His overall shape is very pleasing. I would like a more refined male head and eye. CC.

2nd Grimshaw’s CH Greyflax Diamond Joe At Jamalison.

A mature male who is showing off his maturity to the full. A correctly angled front and balanced rear quarters does allow him to move with some freedom. The overall build and quality of this male is clear, well boned fore quarters and strength behind. I preferred the overall shape of 1st today. However I was still pleased to award him RCC.

3rd Morton and Morgan’s CH Cotherstone Flint And Steel.

Special Beginners Bitch. 1 Entry.

1st Pounder’s Packway New York New York.

A shapely and refined bitch who has a lovely refined head with good proportions, eye and ear set. On the move she is very correct and carries her top line on the move giving a good outline. Pleased to see her awarded Group 4 Special Beginners.

Minor Puppy Bitch. 1 Entry.

1st Barrat’s Stanwith Ixxia.

Lots to like about this puppy in the amount of bone and substance she has without loosing a very feminine look. Return of upper arm and shoulder placement excellent. Curvy body, with nicely angled rear quarters. Not very happy today but I look forward to seeing her grow on. Very pleasing head.

Puppy Bitch. 2 Entries.

1st Lewis’s Luckhurst Whitefeatherfal

A shapely puppy although not as curvy as Minor puppy. Very sweet head, correct eye and ear set. Good length of neck and adequate angles in front and behind. She has enough bone and will finish off nicely when matured. Moved around the ring best of all the puppies today. Best Puppy.

2nd Sharp’s Luckhurst Winsome At Ashtonbrook.

Litter sister to first and of a very similar build although slightly lighter overall. Shapely in her make-up with again a pretty head. Just lacking co-operation today.

Junior Bitch. 2 Entries.

1st Peach’s Kilbourne Flora Macdeva.

Absolutely outstanding youngster. This girl really has it all, with a fantastic head, eye and ear set. Very good front construction in every way. Body width and depth is strong yet has a lovely underline that tucks up giving her a wonderful out-line. Rear quarters in stifle, bone and hocks are all in balance with front. Love her width across hips. She moves very effortlessly, although is still showing signs of immaturity which is nice to see in one so young. Although very young comfortably deserved the Reserve CC.

2nd Constantine’s Kaleginy Syon.

Unfortunate to meet first today. This girl has some lovely qualities. Nothing is exaggerated in any way and moves very freely with an effortless stride. A very pretty head will come on this girl once she has developed her coat and body which will make all the difference.

Yearling Bitch. 2 Entries 1 Absent.

1st Lucas and Dargonne’s Packway Ecotrailer

Stood alone but loved the way this girl stood four square of her own accord, which I see is similar to her litter brother who won his class. On the move, like her brother a very sound Hound indeed, with nothing over done and very correct. Loved her feet too from a lovely front.

Post Graduate Bitch. 6 Entries 2 Absent.

1st Quinton’s Kirojax Pancho.

Shapely Bitch who moves very effortlessly and is very pretty in profile. A beautiful head with correct eye and ear. Good shoulder placement and fore chest, width of body and depth of body good, rear angulations not exaggerated and back end strong. I would like a little more length in body.

2nd Stuart’s Ollandsheart Desdemona

More length of body to this girl and does give a well-balanced appearance in profile with nice angles. Moved well and is very sound, however wasn’t to co-operative with handler. I feel she could do more if she co-operated better.

3rd Lucas and Dargonne’s Packway Smackfarthing.

Limit Bitch. 10 Entries 2 Absent.

1st Bailey’s Greyflax Talluah Lilac

In a very strong class, this girl has a lovely outline but also depth and width of body making her hard to ignore. A pretty head with good length of neck and laid shoulders although not quite the construction of my CC winner from the same kennel. She is very pleasing on the move, especially in profile. Presented superbly and conditioned well. Nothing is over done and the overall Hound is of good quality.

2nd Quinton’s Kilbourne Louisa Chick To Kilbourne.

Very different to 1st but even prettier head. Love her curvy shape without being over angulated in rear. She has a good shoulder placement not as much fore chest as first but well bodied throughout. Very good muscle toning again without being overdone. On the move she is effortless and really covers the ground well.

3rd Brodie and Owen’s Wolfcastle Soul Sister.

Open Bitch 2 Entries.

1st Bailey’s Ch Greyflax Pearls A Singer

This girl is at her best and presented very well. In profile she is a lovely shape and when you go over her it gets even better. Pretty head with dark eye, strong neck leading into a very nicely constructed front with good return of upper arm and lay of shoulder. Fore chest filled in. Depth of body and spring of rib is excellent. Her shape over her loin and the width across her hind quarters is what you expect and want to see in a Deerhound. Strong bone but no mistaking this a feminine Bitch. Moves just as you would expect from this build, she was particularly lively today enabling her to win the CC BOB and in a strong Hound Group go onto gain Group 3.

2nd Lucas and Dargonne’s Packway Little Loxley.

Very shapely and is a very easy moving girl in profile as she moves very effortlessly around the ring. Pretty head, good length of neck and shoulder angles. Underline very correct giving her that lovely shape. Very positive hind quarters.
