City of Birmingham Championship Show 2022 Critique

It’s been a little while since I judged the breed, so I was looking forward to my appointment. In this small but quality entry I found no light eyes, no slack, flat or weak feet, and much-improved front movement.

1st: 1951 PURSGLOVE, Mr K Stranwith Roag.

8yo.Classic head with expressive dark eye, neat ears, well laid shoulders, excellent bone, well-knuckled feet.

Deep in body, carrying a little extra weight so tuck up not so pronounced, shapely over croup. I’d like a little more sweep to stifle , but he has a wide thigh and low hocks.

Moved lightly and freely, a touch close behind.

2 very promising young males with little to separate them at this age.

1st: PEACH, MR AND MRS MICHAEL AND GLENIS Quantistico Guiseppe to Kilbourne NAF

6 month youngster with dark, crisp coat, expressive head with darkest of eyes, good head planes, strong nape to neck and layback of shoulder. Balance in length to height, good length and return of upper arm, substantial bone, well knuckled feet, good width over hip and good let down of hock. He moved soundly and straight with excellent propulsion for one so young, with expansive, effortless front reach. Best Puppy.

2nd: BRODIE, Miss Zoe Louise Sarah & OWEN, Mr Kim Fritzens Zareef at Wolfscastle.

Quality, softly masculine youngster, shapely and balanced in proportions with good bone and feet, bodily just right for age, with good width behind, and correct angles. Today just a little loose in elbows coming towards and tending to tip over his front in stance, but as these are just youth issues I see a bright future for him.

1st: HELPS, Dr Sarah CH. BEARDSWOOD ULYSSA . Scopey, dark bitch who combines strength and femininity, and looks to have the capability for the job she was bred for. Such a kind, dignified expression, darkest of eyes, strength and length of neck with fine, well laid shoulders, upper arm of good length, with elbows close and brisket deep, with good tuck up. Forelimbs straight and well boned, overline shapely with strong loin and excellent width to quarters and over the croup, which is long and powerful. Well angulated behind with wide thigh and well let down hocks. Altogether a pleasing picture of a capable hound, both in stance and on the move, when she covered the ground with ease, and soundly coming and going. Pleased to award her the CC and Best of Breed.

2nd: HEATHCOTE, Miss S L FINNETT & Dr N S A Ch HYNDSIGHT HOW YOU REMIND ME. Another very worthy champion hound who looks like she could do her job with ease. A little longer than the winner, she has a keen, yet feminine expression, beautiful ears, strength in neck and all through to her powerful quarters. Great depth and length to her rib, she stands on well boned legs and neat feet. She has an expansive gait with good drive but I felt she was moved too fast and the carpet didn’t suit her length of hindleg, as her action behind was a bit erratic. Nevertheless, a quality female who should always be up there with the best.
