Scottish Breeds 2007 Critique

I had never been to this show before, and I was delighted to be invited to judge what proved to be a good Deerhound entry. My stewards, together with all the other blue-coated workers, were brilliant. A very enjoyable show.

PD
(1) 1 Trotman & Dockree’s Regalflight Princequillo Of Penherald. attractive and well presented 9 month old. Nice head and expression, good neat ears, nice topline and tail carriage. Moved nicely, although nodding a bit on a fore leg. Good feet. Stood nicely when relaxed. I thought him very promising - well grown and good looking. He was my BP. I eventually realised his sire was BOB.

JD (5) 1 Foy’s Killoeter Laurel. well grown and well coated dog. Nice head and expression, good ears and strong neck and a good shoulder. Nice width of body, and plenty of bone. Good topline, and v.g. feet. A nicely balanced hound who was not helping his handler today. 2 Taylor’s Lyart Yes Minister. attractive and smaller male who moved well and kept his topline. Nice head, good neck and delightfully small and neat ears. Good harsh coat. 3 Milne & Andrews’ Leoch Fiddich.

GD (6) 1 Parsons & McKinnon’s Claonaiglen Orchy. smallish but well proportioned male. Didn’t like front movement but overall moved soundly. A good strong neck, a good shoulder and nice strong quarters. He looked and felt good. 2 Peach’s Greyflax The Mighty Quinn To Kilbourne NAF TAF. balanced hound, well presented. Nice head and expression, and lovely fine ears. Overall a nice male dog, but feet failed to please. Didn’t move freely behind and lacked drive, although movement was true. 3 Spence’s Brylach Macneil.

PGD (6) 1 Morton’s Rosslyn Lebrel. well balanced medium sized hound in very good condition. Nice head, lovely small ears. Good feet, nice top line, good fall away and a good tail. Well presented, and moved with drive. 2 Smart’s Greystiel Loch Ashie. a well built nicely presented masculine hound, lovely ears and good feet. Well boned, but lacked balance and gave a lacklustre performance on the move. 3 Spence’s Brylach Macneil.

LD
(7,2) 1 Spencer’s Gentom Orlando Of Talgavar. I liked this dog. I thought him nice and well balanced, he moved well. Nice head and expression, good neck, good shoulders. Depth and length of body, nice strong quarters and good fall away. Res CC. 2 Peach Gentom Oliver Twist To Kilbourne. larger dog than (1), and a good strong dog overall, but carrying some surplus weight. Good bend of stifle, and a good topline and tail carriage. Feet not his fortune, and he didn’t move freely behind - no drive. 3 Cheshire’s Neroche Hennessy Of Deeranwith.

OD
(5,1) 1 Bond’s Ch Regalflight Stormbird. shapely, mature and masculine Deerhound who moved freely and well, covering plenty of ground. I don’t remember seeing him really ‘move’ before, but he was a dream to watch today, zinging round the ring. Nice length and depth of body, and lovely length from hip to hock. Good feet, and overall a very nicely proportioned and attractive hound. I was delighted to give him the Dog Challenge Certificate. He went on to win BOB. 2 Bain’s Hillmorton Dazzle. another good mature male, more compact in build than (1) above. Well muscled, and a lot to like about him overall. Good depth and breadth, moved well and challenged hard for the Res CC. 3 Shackleton’s Rosslyn Neill.

PB
(7) 1 Reynold’s Wickwar Wagg. nicely balanced and well behaved young lady, moving freely and well. Attractive head, nice body and good topline. Good feet, and nice bend of stifle. 2 Kirkpatrick’s Brackenland For Cusidh.

JB (7) 1 Bond’s Regalflight Moth. A generous, well-boned bitch with a lovely body. Pleasing head, nice ears, good feet, nice length from hip to hock, good topline and super depth of body.  Moved soundly although I would have liked to see her going a bit faster. 2 Wilson’s Killoeter Leyla. well presented, attractive bitch. Nice head and expression, good topline, nice tail carriage, and good length from hip to hock. Nicely balanced overall. 3 Hamilton’s Lilac Wind Bethsabee To Findronach (Imp Fra).

GB
(11,6) 1 Jackson’s Killoeter Kalanchoe. for me, an overweight but very lovely bitch. I liked everything about her - she has no ribs but! Moved well. Rarely do I want to take someone else’s deerhound home with me - alas, on this occasion I had flown up to Scotland. 2 Cartmell’s Drawing Down The Moon To Cusidh. a very nice, shapely bitch. Well balanced overall with nice head and expression. Good slope over her quarters. 3 Peach’s Pendrethan Tamzyn To Kilbourne.

PGB
(12,3) 1 Parsons & McKinnon’s Claonaiglen Orrin. nicely handled and presented medium sized bitch. Nice head and expression, unusually good shoulders, good topline and good fall away over croup. Moved well. Res CC winner. 2 Robertson’s Tartraven Stac A Chaorainn. a well coated, well built bitch. Nice top line, good bend of stifle, good feet and tail. Movement true but rather slack - maybe she would have been happier outside. 3 Rose’s Killoeter Kyla.

LB (9,3) I felt the first four could change places at any time! 1 Spence’s Greystiel Tanar By Brylach. a nice type of hound, well presented and in v.g. condition. Pleasing head and expression, nice topline, good body, nice spring of rib and good fall away over croup to strong tail. Good feet. Movement true and free, although a bit lacklustre. 2 Wragg’s Neroche Halistra. very well presented with pretty head and expression. Moved freely and well, good feet. Nice length from hip to hock, and a good topline. Not the breadth of (1) above. 3 Peach’s Kilbourne Violet. nice stocky sort of bitch who moved freely and well. She stands over plenty of ground, has lovely low set hocks and I liked her overall. 4 Gillie’s Kilbourne Ruby Tuesday.

OB
(7,1) 1 Spence’s Greystiel Tanar By Brylach. had cheered up and was moving with more vigour in this class (see Limit above). She looked good. Bitch CC winner. 2 Kermack’s Beardswood Lustre. feminine bitch who moved freely and well, if not over-excited by the show ring. Attractive overall outline, pleasing head and expression. Nice fall away to a good tail. 3 McDonald, Martyn & Hindley’s Rosslyn Mystique.
